Autism Spectrum Disorder Presentations
Jun 16, 2008Dr. Brenda Smith Myles will present “Successful Parenting Strategies for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder on July 14th at 7 p.m. in the American Heritage auditorium on the Harding University campus. The evening presentation will conclude with a brief question and answer session. According to Richard Denney, principal at Sidney Deener Elementary, Dr. Myles’ presentation will be a great encouragement and resource for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Dr. Brenda Smith Myles will also present, “Autism Spectrum Disorders: Understanding Characteristics and Instructional Implications for Educators” at Sidney Deener Elementary on July 15th. The characteristics of autism spectrum disorders will be highlighted and linked with effective interventions that can be used across multiple settings. Emphasis will be placed on the cycle of tantrums, rage, and meltdowns that are experienced by many on the spectrum. The causes and behaviors that indicate a meltdown is likely to occur, including interventions that can be used throughout the cycle. Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2004 Autism Society of America’s Outstanding Professional Award and the 2006 Princeton Fellowship Award. She has written numerous articles and books on Asperger Syndrome and autism including Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns (with Southwick) and Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success (with Adreon) the winner of the Autism Society of America’s Outstanding Literary Work.
Dr. Myles has made over 500 presentations all over the world and written more than 150 articles and books on autism and Asperger Syndrome. Several of her books have been translated into foreign languages. In addition, she has received millions of dollars in grants to support the education of students on the autism spectrum. Dr. Myles is on the executive boards of several organizations, including the Organization for Autism Research and Maap Services Inc. Brenda was recently acknowledged as the second most productive applied researcher in ASD in the world from 1997 to 2004.
