Lawmakers Want Tougher Penalties for Public Servants who Steal

Nov 17, 2008

There is talk at the State Capitol to create stiffer penalties for public and elected officials who steal or misuse public funds. Recently, city employees in Russellville, Dyer and Stuttgart pleaded guilty to stealing city funds, but were only required to serve probation and pay restitution, not serve any prison time.

Under a new proposal, public servants including school employees, found guilty of crimes would lose their jobs, serve prison time and be disqualified from any future public employment.
