Harding Volleyball falls to 15th Ranked West Florida, 3-0
Nov 17, 2008The Harding volleyball team dropped three straight sets to 15th ranked West Florida Saturday afternoon in semifinal action in the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. Harding ends the 2008 season with a 24-9 overall record.
Harding trailed 10-5 to start the first set. The Lady Bisons wouldn't allow the Argonauts to run away taking an 11-10 lead on seven straight points. The teams exchanged points until West Florida went on a 6-2 run to go ahead 21-18. Harding battled back and a Sarah Phipps kill would bring the Lady Bisons within one point but the Argonauts scored three straight points to take the first set, 25-21.
The second set stayed close until the Argonauts broke away on an 11-2 run to take a 22-13 lead. Harding tried to get the offense going on a Shellie Rummer kill but the West Florida offense struck three straight kills to take set two 25-14. West Florida connected on 17 kills in the set.
West Florida jumped out to a 10-6 lead and wouldn't look back in the third set. Harding scored three straight points to pull the set within three but West Florida would go on a three point run to go ahead 21-15. Harding went on a 5-2 run to pull within two of West Florida. The Argonauts went get three straight points to take the third set 25-20.
Junior outside hitter Manuela Nesheva led the way for Harding with 13 kills and seven digs. Junior outside hitter Sarah Phipps added eight kills and senior middle blocker Shellie Rummer added seven kills for the Lady Bisons.
Leah Tepe, Harding's all-time assists leader, had 29 assists and nine digs for Harding. Sophomore defensive specialist Emily Tate also had nine digs for the Lady Bisons.
West Florida was lead by Luciana Rapach who captured a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. The Argonauts had two other players in double figure digs, Jerica Carter with 12 and Chelsea Wilhoite added 10.
West Florida had 18 errors to Harding's 16. Harding had five service errors in the match.
