Henderson Strives for Excellence in New Role at WCMC

White County Medical Center has named recently retired Cardiologist John Henderson, M.D., as the Medical Director of Quality and Patient Safety. Dr. Henderson is the first physician to fill the role as WCMC takes a proactive approach to the quality of care and patient safety within the hospital.

Dr. Henderson said he is in the process now of interviewing WCMC associates in various departments throughout the hospital to ask for their suggestions on improving patient care and how WCMC administrative representatives and associates can continue to better the hospital.

“I want people to understand that we have a high-quality healthcare institution here that gives excellent care,” Dr. Henderson said. “As healthcare changes and evolves, we are making adjustments here in the hospital to stay current with, or stay ahead of, those changes. For example, White County Medical Center has a Hospitalist Group, which is a group of five physicians who specialize in taking care of patients in the hospital.”

“To many people, this is a new concept; however, it has become a standard practice in the healthcare field,” he added. “The Hospitalist Group is made up of highly-trained physicians who are here all day; their responsibility is to give excellent medical care to patients in the hospital. Therefore, they are not going back-and-forth between the hospital and their clinic. At least one Hospitalist is here to take care of any issues that might arise, and they are all current on the latest procedures that can be done in the hospital setting. The Hospitalists are in a unique position to give their patients the best care and attention that they need and deserve.”

In the past few years, WCMC has seen a marked decline in the number of ventilator-acquired pneumonia cases, according to Dr. Henderson. Now, he and WCMC have partnered with the Johns Hopkins Hospital to establish ‘best practice’ techniques to prevent infections associated with other medical equipment. Continuing to improve communication among physicians, patients and nurses, as well as seeing patients with good outcomes are also on Dr. Henderson’s list of actions to accomplish.

“I enjoy spending my time making efforts to improve quality and care,” Dr. Henderson said. “I am confident that it will continue to be more rewarding as we see evidence of our goals being achieved.”
