May 21, 2012

Gina Cielo, a member of the Harding women's tennis team, earned Capital One Academic All-District VI At-Large honors Monday. It was her third consecutive Academic All-District honor.

Cielo, a native of Lees Summit, Mo., now advances to the national ballot, where she could become Harding's first Academic All-America honoree in women's tennis since Laura Tollett in 2001.

Cielo had a team-best 20-5 singles record and a 14-5 doubles mark during the 2011-12 season. During her career, Cielo won 57 dual singles matches, the 10th-highest total ever by a Lady Bison. During one stretch, she won 19 straight singles matches, the final seven of the 2010-11 season and the first 12 of the 2011-12 season.

A public relations major with a marketing minor, Cielo boasts a 3.96 grade point average.

Sports information directors from Division II schools in District VI vote on the Academic All-District Team. District VI includes the Great American, MIAA, Lone Star, and Heartland conferences.

The Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team will be announced Wednesday, June 6.
