Harding's Josh Spears has a 2.84 ERA for the Xenia (Ohio) Scouts.

Three Baseball Bisons Earn Summer League All-Star Honors

Harding Baseball's Matt Calhoun, Josh Spears and James Anderson have all been named to their respective collegiate summer league all-star teams. Calhoun and Anderson both play in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, and Spears plays in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League.

Calhoun, a graduate of Harding Academy in Searcy who will be a junior next year, plays first base for the Hornell Dodgers. In 27 summer league games, Calhoun is hitting .361 and leads the team with six home runs and 23 RBI. He is second on the team with 25 runs scored.

Last season as a sophomore for the Bisons, Calhoun hit .294 and led Harding with four home runs and 28 RBI. He also led the team with 20 extra-base hits and a .481 slugging percentage.

Anderson will be a junior at Harding next season and is playing this summer for the Adirondack Trail Blazers. He transferred from Concordia College in New York and appeared in 21 games with 13 starts for the Bisons last season. Anderson has hit .368 with a home run and nine RBI for Adirondack.

Calhoun and Anderson will play in the NYCBL All-Star Game in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on Wednesday, July 11.

Spears, also a native of Searcy and graduate of Harding Academy, who will be a sophomore next season at Harding. He is a member of the Xenia (Ohio) Scouts of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and has a 2-1 record and a 2.84 ERA in 10 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He has struck out 16 in 19.0 innings pitched and has allowed only 13 hits.

Spears was 1-2 in 12 appearances out of the bullpen for Harding as a true freshman. He struck out nine in 15 2/3 innings.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star Game will be played Wednesday, July 11 at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
