Harding University Physician Assistant Student Awarded Prestigious Scholarship Emery Leah Camp, a second year student in the PhysicianAssistant Program at Harding University, has been awarded a 2010Physician Assistant Foundation scholarship based upon her outstandingacademic achievement and commitment to community service and qualityhealth care. “PA Foundation scholarships have provided over $2.4 million to morethan 1,200 deserving students, and this year singled out 77recipients. By supporting the Annual Student Scholarship Program weare supporting the next generation of physician assistants. This is acareer path that shows increased trends in growth, salary and jobsecurity,” said Agnes Compagnone, RPA-C, president of the foundation. Harding University selects PA students based upon their experience,academic standing and character. Part of the curriculum encourages aservice learning component where students become engaged in helpingthe underserved and practice their newly learned clinical skills. Seniors enrolled in the master’s project course use a CommunityOriented Primary Care (COPC) model to plan and perform an interventiondesigned to raise the overall health of a chosen community. Afteridentifying a specific population, students research that group’sgreatest health needs, obtain feedback from community leaders, thencreate and implement a program to improve a specific priority fortheir target community. Project completion includes a professionalpaper documenting their findings and an oral presentation reportingtheir activities. The goal of the project is to actually make adifference in a public health arena while still a student. The PA Foundation develops and allocates resources that empower thephysician assistant profession to impact the health and wellness ofcommunities it serves. It provides grants and scholarships tophysician assistants and PA students who bring much-needed health careto underserved and underprivileged communities in the U.S. and aroundthe world. Scholarships and grants are made available through the generosity ofindividual contributions, corporate support and various constituentorganizations. Harding had a record enrollment this year of more than 6,600 studentsfrom all 50 states and 49 foreign countries.
